Nutrition & Supplements

  1. Eat More Colorful Veggies – And whenever possible, get the organic/non-GMO produce. Try to shop local Farmer’s Markets if you have them in your area – the prices tend to be reasonable and the produce is very fresh. There are also home delivery options like Farm Fresh to You that deliver fresh organic produce they grow themselves plus products from local farmers. Check to see if they deliver to your area, and if so, use my code JUDY2593 for $15 off your first order. You can buy from your nearby grocery stores or plant a garden yourself – and don’t forget the frozen section! Frozen veggies are picked and quickly frozen which retains their nutrients – plus they often cost less.
  2. Eat Ground Flaxseed Daily – this superfood is excellent for fiber, heart health, and balancing hormones. Use a spoonful on your oatmeal or in a salad, or add to a fruit smoothie. Also, be sure to store ground flaxseed in the refrigerator to keep it from going rancid.
  3. Drink Green Tea – This earthy green tea is loaded with catechins that promote brain, skin, and heart health.
  4. Take a Vitamin D3 + K2 Supplement – The combination of of D3 + K2 vitamins help supports bones and your immunity system. I have a difficult time swallowing capsules and just started taking this vitamin D3 + K2 supplement. It’s about double the price for double the product; is a tiny softgel, and it has quickly boosted my energy levels. I highly recommend it!
  5. Incorporate Turmeric or Curcumin into your diet – These are powerful anti-inflammatory spices and can help with those aches and pains from age or arthritis. You can buy the capsules and take them with food, or sprinkle the powder in food. You can also buy turmeric from the store and add a small piece to your morning smoothie or use a garlic press and add it to hot water with ginger.

Anti-Aging Ideas for Movement & Mindfulness

  1. Daily Walks in Nature (20–30 minutes) – Walking can be one of the easiest anti-aging ideas and it helps support cardiovascular health while lowering stress and improving your mood. If you don’t live near a trail or in nature, then walk around your neighborhood or even an indoor mall. Many malls open early specifically for walkers, so you might meet a new friend or two while you walk! You like to track your steps with an inexpensive pedometer, or if you want to spend a bit more, try a FitBit Watch Tracking Device.
  2. Gentle Yoga or Tai Chi YouTube Videos – Grab a inexpensive but quality yoga mat and find a free yoga or Tai-Chi class online. Both of these exercise types improve balance, flexibility, and mental clarity. I highly recommend Don Fiore’s Tai Chi YouTube videos for beginners and seniors, and Yoga With Adriene , also on YouTube.
  3. Resistance Bands for Strength Training – These help strengthen muscles and bones, which reduces your fall risk. You can buy loop bands that resemble large rubber bands; or the “over the door” bands with handles; or try the elastic strips you’ve likely seen or used in physical therapy.
  4. Stretching Routine Before Bed – A good stretching routine helps keep your joints flexible and healthy, and if done before bed can help you sleep better at night. Senior Shape Fitness on YouTube has several stretch routines you can try before bed or after you get up, in addition to all types of short to long workouts you can do.
  5. Dance at Home to Favorite Music – Turn on your favorite tunes and shake your booty like nobody is watching!! Dancing is excellent exercise and puts you in a good mood while helping your balance and getting your blood circulating. If you’re like me, you still have a box of old records but no means of playing them – I just ordered this inexpensive record player with built-in speakers and it even looks vintage. I can’t wait to try it out!

Anti-aging Ideas for the Brain & Mood Boosters

  1. Learn Something New – Take a free or low-cost class on Skillshare, Coursera, or local community centers. And you can invest in an annual membership for under $20 per month!
  2. Start a Daily Gratitude Journal – It’s amazing how a simple act of writing down one thing that you’re grateful for each day can change your outlook on life. Give it a try – simply writing one item a day in a gratitude journal or notebook will enhance your emotional well-being and mental sharpness.
  3. Play Brain Games or Puzzles – You can do these online, on your phone, or get hard copies of crossword books, Word-Search, or Sudoku. These help keep your brain sharp and they’re fun to do! And many options come in larger print sizes for anyone who needs them! For digital game options, my favorite apps include The New York Time Games (especially for Wordle) and Luminosity – both have free versions or you can purchase annual memberships through your carrier. And they can also be played on your computer, so check them out!
  4. Listen to Podcasts or Audiobooks – I subscribe to Audible.com and can listen to commercial-free podcasts, free books and more. Also check your library – mine uses the Libby app which is free and lets me download books to my phone or I can listen on my computer. Audiobooks and podcasts help stimulate your imagination and curiosity, and are great to listen to while you take walks or are doing household chores. I have an Apple iphone and can listen for free through their app Apple Podcasts, plus you can listen/watch them on YouTube and Spotify and iHeart Radio. Podcasts can be listened to on your phone and/or computer.
  5. Limit News Overload & Screen Time – If you’re feeling stressed from things going on in the world, or are needing to stop the never-ending alerts that pop up on your phone, consider taking a break from the news and disconnecting from technology for a day or a week or ? This may turn out to be one of the most difficult anti-aging ideas as technology surrounds us daily. But it won’t cost you a dime and you’ll find you’ll be able to sleep better and your stress level will be more manageable.
anti-aging ideas include herb bags with epsom salts and lavender in muslin bags

Skin, Sleep & Stress

  1. Use a Silk or Satin Pillowcase – Sleeping on pillowcases made from these materials are gentler on your skin and hair. Plus they help prevent wrinkles and dryness, and are reasonably priced at less than $15 each.
  2. DIY Natural Face Mask (e.g., honey + yogurt) – Make your own natural face mask by mixing ingredients like organic fruits (like avocados or strawberries), eggs (particularly egg whites), plain yogurt or cream, oatmeal, honey, herbs and even coconut or olive oil. Depending on your skin needs, you can create your own concoction to hydrate and nourish your skin at home.
  3. Epsom Salt Baths with Lavender Oil – Epsom salts help relieve muscle aches and pains, while lavender oil promotes better sleep and reduces stress. You can even make your own energizing herbal bath salt bags so you just pop one in the bath whenever you need it! Plus these herb and salt-filled muslin bags make excellent gifts for your friends.
  4. Wear Sunscreen Daily – By this stage of life, we all know the dangers of extended sun exposure. So prevent further skin aging and UV damage by wearing sunscreen daily. But remember – most sunscreens contain cancerous and other harmful materials, so be diligent in reading the ingredients before you buy. This Native suncreen SPF 30 is priced at $20 and has excellent ratings on the YUKA app along with a few others. Personally, I look for the ones that babies use and can highly recommend Nivea Kids Sensitive Protect and Play as it doesn’t have any perfumes or nanoparticles (it is more expensive though at around $30)
  5. Practice 5-Minute Daily Meditation – Did you know that meditating for just 5 minutes each day will improve your stress levels and attitude A LOT??!! Daily meditation is one of my favorite anti-aging ideas as it also lowers stress hormones and improves brain aging, which is huge for us seniors. You can find free guided meditations on YouTube or Spotify or podcasts. I like to listen to Mindful in Minutes – she has such a soothing voice and a variety of topic options to listen to. You can also meditate on your own in the privacy of your home. I like to meditate for a few minutes each morning before I get out of bed – it grounds me, and lets me set my intentions for the day. You can also meditate sitting upright in your chair or use a pretty meditation pillow . Some people like to burn incense or use enjoy the sounds from Tibetan bowls to start and end their meditation sessions.

Anti-Aging Ideas for Beauty

Most of the anti-aging ideas I covered are for helping us age better from the inside our bodies and mind. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about some of the many beauty products available the outside. I’m not going to recommend any particular products as that would be a different post entirely; but do know there are products available for people with dark spots, acne-prone skin, uneven skin tone and even dark circles.

These products include salicylic acid, counter retinol serum and hyaluronic acid. There are a variety of anti-aging ideas and products that can help smooth fine lines and give you clear skin, which help you look younger.

These products for anti-aging ideas are available for most skin types including sensitive skin, though they may also cause dry skin. I personally try to use as natural a product as possible, so try to look for ones that have aloe vera, shea butter, jojoba oil, vitamin e, or vitamin c.

Final Thoughts

It goes without saying that we solo-dwellers need to socialize and interested. Living life with purpose is what keeps us young at heart, whether that is through hobbies, socializing with family and friends, faith-based activities and more. Remember — a big part of aging well is our state of mind, so remember this while you incorporate some of these tips into your life today.

I hope these anti-aging ideas are helpful and would love to learn more! If you have some anti-aging ideas to share, please put them in the comment section below so we can all benefit.
